Dirt Corps (DC) continued work with Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) on the Highland Park Home Zone Program. In support of this program, DC provided outreach support and planted 8 roadside pollinator gardens with native shrubs and perennials. Roadside gardens along S. Henderson St. between 4th and 5th Ave S. were constructed in March 2022.
Prior to planting, DC provided targeted outreach to homeowners with newly installed pollinator gardens near their homes. Then, over the course of two days in May, the Dirt Corps team planted 422 perennials and shrubs throughout the gardens along S. Henderson St.
Plants used in the design were a mixture of PNW natives as well as non-native flowering plants. Species were selected for their proven low maintenance and low water needs.
This included well-known evergreen plants such as Lavender, Rosemary and Hebe and PNW native evergreen ground covers such as Ceanothus, Kinnikinnick, Creeping Oregon Grape.
Plants were distributed among the 8 pollinator gardens according to dimensions and feedback from residents.
